I'm taking 3 classes this semester, well, 2 classes and choir. Both are art classes, Photography 2 and Design 1. I love both of them, and for the most part, enjoy going to them. I am so beyond frustrated in the design class though.

I am the only person in the class that has consistently been prepared for every class. It's gotten progressively worse as the semester has gone along, and came to a head today. I was the only person in class with all the materials we needed to do out current assignment. There are 10 people in the class. So, I am the only person that will prepared for next class.

The worst part of all of this is that I have to sit through this class and listen to everyone act surprised day after day when they don't have all their supplies, or don't have their homework done, etc... We've known since the first day of class what supplies we were going to need, and at the beginning of each assignment, we get a handout with all the instructions and what we need to do each.

The stuff we need for the current assignment is a special paper that you can only get online. It was sold out for a while at the beginning of the semester, but I kept checking back and was able to get it about a month ago. Even the teacher kept checking, and she knew it was back in stock. She told everyone else today that they have to have it, and there is no excuse for them not to since we've known about it since the first day of class. I hope she follows through.

Is it bad that I took great pleasure in flaunting the fact that I was prepared for class today? I think I may have been a little smug about it, and that's not normally something I do, but I was tired of the crap, and wanted to send a message. I finally told the teacher today how frustrated I was, and she understood. She is too, especially since the other classes had their supplies. I feel bad for her because this is her first year teaching here, and this looks really bad. I've never seen this before in any classes I've ever taken.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm older than everyone in the class besides the teacher.

That would make me pretty mad and I would be a hell of a lot more vocal about it. There is just no excuse for paying to take a class and showing up unprepared. What the hell are they thinking? I hope she is planning on flunking some people.

no. this kind of reminds me of my 9th grade history class. the teacher always said that if the students had their homework done & participated in class (i.e. raised their hand & answered some questions) and that would count a lot towards the grade we got. the next year several girls i had the class with were very surprised that i passed & they failed. i thought well if you had done what the teacher had said, you would have too.

I tried to post this as a comment but accidentally made it its own post.

I once had students all decide together to not do homework because I wouldn't be able to assign them all failing grades.  I assured them this was not the case but they didn't believe me.  I told my boss and then assigned the grades they earned.

Your teacher should make it clear that showing up unprepared is unacceptable and will be met with a 0 in the day's project.  She should make sure assignments are clearly posted online somewhere students can easily access so they have no wiggle room to claim they didn't know what was expected.

I do know for a fact that they didn't get credit for having their materials. We didn't have anything actually due at the end of that class, so not sure how it will affect their grades. The next class, where we actually did have an assignment due by the end, I know the ones that didn't have anything done will be penalized. Not sure to what extent. I guess we'll see.
